Straw pellet boiler
In 2012 Simon Jones, from Lincolnshire Poacher Cheese, contacted us with the vision to install a straw pellet boiler to replace the existing steam heating system at their Ulceby Grange Farm and dairy.
We designed a heating system that included a 12,000 litre accumulator tank and interconnecting pipe work to the various site locations that required heat. The temperature control of the cheese vat is vital to the quality of the finished product, “The Lincolnshire Poacher Cheese”. This demanded specialist equipment, which we tailored to suit the precise parameters of the cheese-making process and so our design met the specific requirements of the project.
The new system was successfully integrated into the existing steam heating system to allow continued cheese production during any future maintenance work. All work was completed on target during the annual two weeks dairy shutdown. Further minor alterations have resulted in continued improved performance with no disruption to production.
This new system…
• Saves 20,000 litres of heating oil annually
• Significantly reduces costs
• Significantly reduces carbon emissions
• Resulted in RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) payments that last twenty years
• Reduced levels of condensation in the dairy
“To make cheese I heat 5000 litres of milk each day using steam generated in an oil boiler. I decided to have Peter install a straw pellet boiler as my farm produces plenty of straw.
The project included connecting my house, swimming pool and holiday let. Peter organised the conversion of the cheese vat, and also completed the RHI application for us!”
